Man executed by firing squad in South Carolina

On April 11, 2025, South Carolina executed 42-year-old Mikal Mahdi by firing squad, marking the state's second use of this method in five weeks and the fifth execution in the past eight months. Mahdi was convicted for the 2004 murder of off-duty police officer Captain James Myers, whom he shot nine times and set on fire. He also confessed to killing a gas station clerk in North Carolina during the same crime spree. ​Mahdi chose the firing squad over lethal injection or electrocution, viewing it as the least painful option. He was strapped to a metal chair and shot by three volunteer prison employees. The execution took place at Broad River Correctional Institution and was witnessed by nine individuals, including a family member of Myers. Mahdi did not make a final statement. ​

His legal appeals were denied by both the U.S. Supreme Court and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. Advocates criticized the execution, highlighting Mahdi's traumatic childhood and inadequate legal defense as systemic failures.

South Carolina resumed executions in September 2024 after a 13-year hiatus, with Mahdi's execution being the 12th in the U.S. in 2025. The state currently has 26 inmates on death row.
